The Creation of Our Student Exchange

The best way to tell you about Our Student Exchange is to explain how the idea came and why I felt a need to solve a problem that all participants in exchange experience - especially the Coordinator of the Exchange.

Adelaide’s burgeoning startup scene: MegaPitch and $3,000 prize from BlueChilli

Blue Chilli Blog by Colette Grgic

Ask anyone who doesn't live there what’s happening in Adelaide and the answer is bound to be either “church” or “nothing”.

But in the past few years Adelaide has stepped up its game and it now boasts – apart from pop-up bars and a hipster coffee shops –  a tight start-up community that reminds me a bit of the early days of Fishburners in Sydney. Champions in the community are driving a collaborative, co-working and co-learning ecosystem and I’d say watch out for new companies that emerge from Adelaide’s burgeoning start-up scene.

Last Friday we had the pleasure of being on the judging panel for Adelaide’s MegaPitchevent. MEGA is a 3 months startup pre-accelerator program in Adelaide. Over a 13 week validation period participants receive support from MEGA’s vibrant community of founders, successful mentors and space to work at Majoran Distillery.

Our Student Exchange, an online platform to eliminate the administrative headache of student exchange programs, has won the Best Pitch at the MEGA 2014 awards held on Friday 21 November.

The win was particularly satisfying for second-time MEGA participant, Renee Buckley, who worked on someone else’s idea two years ago and walked away with little, before coming back to the program this year with her own concept.

Paperwork helllllll...

or so it seemed - forms for this, forms for that, doctors, schools, immunisation clinics…. and more. However, I am sending my child around the world, so they really should know all this, but it is the 'un-fun’ part of exchange. It seems to go on and on and on and just one more form to sign, initial and witness. This is just to apply to go on exchange - in order to be accepted or rejected.

This is only the tip of the iceberg however, wait until they are accepted and visa applications need to be completed, sent off with passports to interstate destinations (you wonder if you will see it again and how are you going to get another one this close to them leaving - all of this goes around in your head but you send it anyway…. there is not an alternative scenario).
